About
About Bar Prep by SHEP
Bar Prep by SHEP is an essay practice tool for the bar exam. You write full essays, get instant structured feedback on where your analysis breaks down, and drill the exact rules you missed. This page explains what it is, how the scoring works, and why we built it.
What it is
Bar Prep by SHEP is an AI-powered essay practice platform for the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), the Florida bar exam, and the California bar exam. You write a full practice essay and receive a structured score report in seconds, broken down by the same dimensions a human grader rewards.
It is a supplement to a full bar review course, not a replacement for one. Students use it to get unlimited active essay reps between the graded assignments their course already provides. There is a free diagnostic essay with no sign-up required.
How the scoring works
Every essay is scored across four rubric dimensions: issue spotting, rule statement, fact application, and organization. The score report identifies the specific legal rules you missed and links each one to a targeted recall drill, so practice turns directly into repair.
The grading is built to give fast, specific, study-oriented feedback. It is not a substitute for an official bar grader, a tutor, or a licensed bar-prep course, and we say so plainly throughout the product. Its job is to give you more reps and faster feedback than you can get anywhere else between graded assignments.
Who builds it
Bar Prep by SHEP is built and maintained by the SHEP team. It grew out of SHEP's core legal education product and is focused entirely on the written portion of the bar exam. The practice content, scoring rubrics, and study guides on this site are produced and reviewed by the team.
Why it exists
Most bar prep is passive: you watch lectures, read outlines, and memorize rules. But the essay portion is not a memorization test. It rewards the ability to apply rules to new facts under time pressure, and that skill only comes from writing essays and seeing exactly where your analysis falls short.
The problem is feedback. Graded essays in a course are scarce and slow. We built Bar Prep by SHEP so a student can write an essay at 2am, see precisely which rules they missed and where their application went thin, and drill those rules immediately. Active practice with a tight feedback loop is the fastest way we know to improve a bar essay score.
